2013 ford flex review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Improved, great for family road trips. introductionsubstantially upgraded for 2013, the ford flex is an innovative vehicle, and the only full-size car of its kind. The mazda5, a distant cousin, is the same people-moving type of vehicle in the midsize class, but the larger and smoother flex is in a field of one. And 45 percent of flex owners are women.  with standard seating for seven in its 2-3-2 configuration (optional 2-2-2), the flex is all about people. Except when the seats fold flat, as they easily do; then it can be all about cargo. Because flex is not built on a rugged body-on-frame chassis, it's not like an old-school suv. Nor is flex like a van. At first ford called it a crossover utility vehicle, but now ford has decided that the term is unclear, so the latest official word is that it's just a utility vehicle. We'd call it a superb cross between a limo and a taxi. The hood and roof are long and flat, the windshield stands relatively straight, the side and rear glass is flat, and the corners are sharp, although the front end has been rounded a bit for 2013. The shape is honest, simple, and even elegant, for a box. It suggests interior room and maximum space utilization. It has presence and upscale cues that some might call bling. The grille and tailgate have been redone for 2013, with a chrome or satin aluminum band, but frankly we can't say that's an improvement over the old three bars and signature blue oval.  there are substantial improvements for 2013. Most notable is a revised v6 that comes standard on the base 2013 flex se and 2013 flex sel: for 2013, the 3. 5-liter v6 engine delivers 25 more horsepower, to 287 hp (with 254 foot-pounds of torque at 4000 rpm), while gaining 1 mile per gallon, to 18 city/25 highway, according to the epa. This boost to the base 3. 5-liter v6 is the result of new twin independent variable camshaft timing, or ti-vct as ford calls it. Ford continues to lead the way among american manufacturers in engine technology.  the full-tilt flex limited all-wheel-drive model uses the dazzling twin-turbo 3. 5-liter ecoboost v6 with 365 horsepower and 350 foot-pounds of torque at a super-low 1500 rpm, which gets just 2 mpg less than the base v6, or 16 city/23 highway. But we also got good miles on an easy freeway and around town, and the flex ride is smooth and composed. It's comfortable and doesn't feel firm. The cabin is silent and steady. It's a pleasure to drive.  we loved the seamless 6-speed transmission shifting and programming, and the ergonomics of the perfectly designed paddles, on the limited. The 2013 flex interior looks full, spacious, and luxurious. The basics and details are well covered. Materials, plastics, fabrics, leathers and carpets are well matched with textures, and sheen is nicely controlled. The visual impression is upscale comfort and luxury, more lincoln than ford.  the cabin is exceptionally quiet, as there's been a lot of work on sound deadening on the new 2013 flex, for example liners in the wheelwells.  the 2013 ford flex comes with a new brake system. We used the brakes hard on curvy two-lanes, and we loved the responsiveness and pedal feel. There's also new electronic power steering with a quicker steering ratio. Although the flex is no sports sedan, the cornering is impressive for a vehicle like this, with fairly high limits.  however there's more to that than the tightened steering and suspension. For 2013, there's also new torque vectoring and curve control technology. More typically found on high-performance cars, torque vectoring uses the brakes to imitate the effect of a limited-slip differential, balancing torque between the front wheels during cornering, resulting in better grip and reduced understeer. Curve control is like electronic stability control, only quicker; it senses when a vehicle is entering a curve too fast, and applies the brakes to individual wheels to cut the speed by up to 10 mph in one second. Think freeway on-ramps or off-ramps, especially in the wet.  if those safety features weren't enough, the 2013 flex is available with the automotive world's first production rear inflatable shoulder belts, designed to offer improved comfort and protection for rear-seat passengers. The advanced restraint system is designed to help reduce head, neck and chest injuries for rear seat passengers, often children and older passengers who can be more vulnerable to such injuries. lineupthe 2013 ford flex comes in three models: flex se, flex sel, flex limited.  the front-wheel-drive flex se 30,885) comes with ford's new 3. 5-liter ti-vct v6 engine making 287 horsepower, and a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual gear selection. Seating is three rows, of two-three-two seats in cloth upholstery, with 6-way power driver's seat. Sel trim adds foglamps, stainless steel exterior trim, power heated mirrors, 18-inch painted aluminum wheels, dual zone climate control, 10-way power driver seat and 6-way power passenger seat, myfordtouch electronic controls with 8-inch lcd touch-screen, media hub with usb ports, input jacks, and satellite radio.  flex limited fwd 39,230) and limited awd 43,850) get the 3. 6-liter ecoboost twin-turbo v6 making 365 horsepower, and the 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Limited also adds chrome door handles, satin aluminum grille and liftgate trim, hid headlamps, led taillamps, 19-inch painted aluminum wheels, 110v power outlet, adjustable pedals with memory, ambient lighting, woodgrain instrument and door trim, perforated leather-trimmed seats, blis blind spot monitoring system, hd radio, push-button start, power liftgate, rain-sensing wipers, rearview camera, remote start, sony 12-speaker audio system, and voice-activated navigation system. Active safety features include torque vectoring control, curve control, anti-lock brakes (abs), advancetrac electronic traction control, rsc roll stability control, brake assist, and electronic brake force distribution (ebd). Optional all-wheel drive can enhance safety in slippery conditions. walkaroundthe ford flex is a stylish box. Some will find the shape honest, simple, and even elegant, for a box. It suggests interior room and maximum space utilization. It has presence and upscale cues that some might call bling. It's not shy.  five feet eight inches tall, the flex is higher than a station wagon but lower than an suv like the ford explorer. We wonder if it's an afterthought. We're not sure if it helps or not. These indents must also help stiffen the doors, for a more solid closing sound.  what does work is the addition for 2013 of black for the roof (adding to silver or white); too bad the black roof comes with a package that includes 20-inch wheels. We drove a titanium-colored flex with a black roof. Climate Control✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Passenger Airbag✔ Remote Start✔ Navigation System✔ Aluminum Wheels

2008 ford edge review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Benefiting from all-wheel drive and a fully independent suspension, the edge is easier to control than a truck-based suv in the snow or on wet, slippery roads. Getting in and out of it is easier, too. Yet it gives up nothing in passenger and cargo space. In fact, the back seats in the edge are roomier than those in the explorer, a benefit of its design.  the edge is not small. Considered a midsize crossover utility vehicle, the edge competes with the nissan murano, toyota highlander and cuvs, all of which are larger than their slippery styling suggests.  we found the edge roomy and comfortable with fully foldable seats for big cargo carrying. It drives well, with good performance from a modern v6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.  the edge has a contemporary look we find appealing. We like its bold chrome grille. Ford sync communications and entertainment system is available on the 2008 edge, allowing the driver to change radio stations and make phone calls using voice commands. The available navigation system adds voice activation, the driver's window now powers up or down with one touch, and a new interior appearance package has red seating surfaces with contrasting stitching. A power liftgate, a universal garage door opener, and 20-inch wheels are available. lineupthe 2008 ford edge comes in three trim levels: se, sel, and limited. All models are powered by a 3. 5-liter v6 engine that produces 265 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque, coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard. All-wheel drive is available for all models.  edge se 25,565) and se awd 27,315) come equipped with cloth upholstery, driver's seat lumbar adjustment, air conditioning, cruise control, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, 60/40 split second-row seat, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, remote keyless entry, 4-speaker am/fm/cd stereo with auxiliary input jack, rear spoiler, and p235/65r17 tires on alloy wheels. A six-disc cd changer 245) is optional.  edge sel 27,560) and sel awd 29,310) add fog lamps, six-way power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, keyless keypad entry; 6cd, automatic headlights, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a vehicle information center. Options include an upgraded sound system 385) and a seating flexibility package 985) that adds leather upholstery, a flat-folding six-way power adjustable front passenger seat, and a second-row split folding rear seat. Available for both se and sel models are ford sync entertainment and communications system 395) and p245/60r18 tires on alloy wheels 295). These tires are also offered on chromed alloy wheels for the sel 750).  the new edge limited 30,555) and limited awd 32,305) come with leather upholstery, ford's audiophile sound system with nine speakers, ford sync communications and entertainment system, rear park assist, heated front seats, flat-folding six-way power adjustable front passenger seat, memory for the driver's seat and driver's exterior mirror, second-row reclining and power-folding split seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, universal garage door opener, interior air filter, heated mirrors, and p245/60r18 tires on chromed alloy wheels. Limited options include an interior appearance package 525) with red leather seat inserts with contrast stitching; p245/50r20 tires on alloy wheels 895); towing package 395); navigation system 1995); sirius satellite radio 195); power liftgate 490); rear-seat dvd entertainment system 1295); roof rails 95). The vista roof dual sunroof 1395); the portion over the front seats works like a typical sunroof, though larger, while a fixed glass panel spans the second row of seats; power-operated cloth shades can close off both sections.  safety features that come standard on all models include dual front airbags, seat-mounted side-impact air bags for the front seats, side curtain airbags with rollover protection for both rows of seating, anti-lock brakes, traction control, advancetrac electronic stability control with rollover mitigation, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Rear park assist is available and can help alert the driver to objects or people behind the vehicle when backing up. walkaroundthe edge is bigger than it looks in photos. The reason is that it has a wide track and a long wheelbase with short overhangs. What does all this mean? (the track is the distance between the left and right wheels. The long wheelbase and wide track are not just about looks; they make for a more stable vehicle because the majority of the mass is inside the wheels. A go-kart is the ultimate expression of this look. We're not suggesting the edge looks like a go-kart, but its aggressive stance makes it stand apart from the tippy look of traditional suvs with relatively narrow track measurements and massive front and rear overhangs.  the edge features ford's newly rediscovered bold, american design. The big chrome grille is placed well forward and has wide chrome slats that merge into the relatively small headlights at each side. The high hood is short as the windshield rakes forward more like a sports car or modern minivan.  despite having a relatively high waist line with shallow side windows, the edge does not appear as stubby as photographs sometimes suggest. The sporty look is helped by pronounced fender flares and large wheels. The rear tailgate slopes quite significantly and is nicely rounded, avoiding the truck-like rear tailgates found on many suvs. We found the rear design to be a cross between a lexus rx and a bmw x3, which cannot be a bad thing.  the vista roof adds expansive twin glass moonroofs that cover the whole roof, providing all passengers with a clear view of the sky. There is only a foot-wide panel between the front and rear panels that is not transparent. interiorthe edge combines a stylish, comfortable interior with lots of cargo-hauling utility.  front-seat occupants find a generous amount of room, largely due to the vehicle's generous width. There is a large center console with a storage box big enough for a laptop computer. Two decent cupholders reside alongside the substantial shifter. The center stack is angled outward to make it easy to reach the large knobs for the climate and entertainment controls. The interior appearance package adds red seat inserts and contrasting red stitching that combine to give the interior a sporty look. It can recognize bluetooth-enabled cell phones, access their phonebooks, and play calls and read text messages through the speakers. It also has a usb interface to connect with ipods and other mp3 players (it will charge an ipod). To issue a voice command, the driver hits a steering wheel button and speaks the command. Occupants can tell the system to play a specific artist, album or track stored on an mp3 player. Headroom is also reasonable in the rear, even with the optional vista roof. The rear-center passenger even gets more room than normal in a vehicle of this size, thanks to the wide track. Getting in and out is easier thanks to rear wheels that are placed well back and thus allow for less intrusion from the wheel wells.  carrying cargo is an area where the edge excels. The tailgate lifts to reveal a wide opening. With the rear seats are in place there's a reasonable amount of cargo room, but pressing a button automatically reclines the rear seats to open up 69. 0 cubic feet of storage space on a nearly flat floor. Furthermore, the front passenger seatback can be folded forward to provide a mostly level floor space for long objects all the way to the dashboard. The rear seatback splits 60/40 for increased versatility and the back reclines several degrees on all models for.

2013 ford c-max hybrid review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Five-door hatch in hybrid and energi plug-in hybrid models. introductionthe ford c-max is a five-door hatchback originally built for the european market and new to the u. For the 2013 model year. The 2013 ford c-max comes in hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, the latter dubbed energi. (no non-hybrid version are available in the u. Here's the difference: ford c-max hybrid uses a 1. 4-kwh lithium-ion battery, while ford c-max energi packs a hefty 7. 6-kwh lithium-ion pack. Gears are selected by an electronic continuously variable transmission (ecvt).  ford c-max hybrid is epa-rated at 45/40 mpg city/highway, those figures lower than the initial numbers. In general, hybrids are most efficient in the city, since stop-and-go driving uses the regenerative braking system more frequently to help charge the battery.  ford c-max energi plug-in hybrid is rated at 44/42 mpg. The energi plug-in hybrid is epa-rated at 100 mpge combined miles per gallon equivalent. According to ford, it has a top speed of 85 mph. It can drive up to 21 miles in electric-assisted mode, and can go up to 620 miles with a fully charged battery and a full tank of gas. This beats the toyota prius plug-in, which has a six-mile all-electric range and 540-mile total range.  like something out of a sci-fi movie, the c-max can learn frequently driven routes and will automatically adjust its settings to maximize efficiency. Ford engineers developed this feature, called ev+, which uses the car's built-in gps and proprietary software to adjust how battery power is used. There's a 60/40-split rear seat that folds completely flat, creating more room for cargo. However, because of its battery, the c-max lacks the trunk space of most gas-powered compact sedans. Optional is a handsfree liftgate, first found on the ford escape, that allows anyone with the key fob to open the hatch by simply waving a foot underneath the back of the vehicle.  versions of the c-max equipped with navigation use the latest version of myfordtouch, which has improved since the last generation but can still be irksome to use. Still, there are some handy features, like charging station location information on the c-max energi. But, unfortunately, it's not possible to tell in advance if those stations are already occupied. Once the c-max energi is plugged in, however, ford's software can alert drivers via text message if the charge is interrupted, foiling any potential plug stealers.  competitors to ford c-max are few and far between. Alternatives to the hybrid include honda insight, toyota prius and prius v wagon. Plug-ins that rival the c-max energi are currently limited to the chevrolet volt and the toyota prius plug-in. The hybrid is available in two trim levels, and the energi is offered in a single trim.  the c-max hybrid se 25,200) comes standard with cloth seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, manual adjustable driver and passenger seats, a leather-wrapped, tilt/telescoping steering wheel with menu and audio controls, leather shift knob, power windows, trip computer, cruise control, remote keyless entry, ford sync voice-activated system, 6-speaker audio system with cd player, auxiliary jack and usb port, a 60/40 split folding rear seat and 17-inch aluminum wheels.  the c-max hybrid sel 28,200) adds leather-trimmed and heated seats, a power adjustable driver seat, pushbutton start, universal garage door opener, satellite radio capability with a 6-month included subscription, the myford touch interface with touchscreen, fog lamps, power heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals, rain sensing wipers and a reverse sensing system. Most of these additional features can be added as options on the hybrid se. Options on the hybrid sel include a package that bundles an upgraded sony audio system, navigation, hd radio 1,195); another that adds a power liftgate, rearview camera and hands-free liftgate 1,695), and a third that combines both at a slight discount 2,495). Rearview camera is optional. walkaroundford is strictly limiting the c-max to hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants in the u. Maybe because research says early hybrids based on existing gasoline models didn't sell. Marketers soon figured out that people wanted a unique-looking car that people could recognize right away as being a hybrid. And although ford is now offering an electric version of the focus and a both hybrid and plug-in versions of the fusion sedan, the c-max will satisfy those who still insist that alternative fuel cars should look different.  despite its distinctive shape, the ford family resemblance is apparent. C-max has the same wheelbase and footprint as the ford focus, but, in addition to its wagon silhouette, it's also taller and has a more upright, utilitarian look. The front end features a thin, narrow upper grille with the oval ford logo, and a wide-mouthed, geometric lower grille with strong horizontal lines. Headlamps are long and angular, and blend up into the hood line.  from the side, the c-max has a high roofline and strong wheel arches. A high, straight character line runs across the door handles to the wraparound tail lamps. Standard 17-inch wheels make the car look substantial, in contrast with some of the dinkier wheels and tires found on early hybrid models from other brands.  in back, angular tail lamps and deep body creases keep it interesting without being obnoxious. A prominent rear bumper is both distinctive and useful for resting groceries or packages. Optional on the c-max is ford's handsfree liftgate technology, which allows anyone with the key fob to open the liftgate by simply waving a foot underneath the back of the vehicle. interiorthe similarities to the ford focus continue with the interior design of the c-max. The instrument panel, climate controls and center stack feature the same angles, vents and knobs. It looks busy compared to the prius's clean, almost too-austere controls.  the c-max instrument cluster uses a central speedometer with ford's pleasing soft blue lighting. On either side, 4. 2-inch lcd displays keep drivers informed about energy use, phone functions, audio settings and other vehicle details. Dubbed smartgauge, these dual screens include a brake coach feature that helps train drivers how to get the most out of the regenerative braking system.  the steering wheel on the c-max is covered with soft-touch material and is comfortable to hold and use. However, as with other ford steering wheels, the myriad controls look confusing and cluttered. The audio and handsfree phone controls, which are placed low on the wheel, are especially awkward to use.  overall, materials are attractive and appear durable. The gear shift seems unnecessarily large and bulky, and sticks out at an angle from the center console in sharp contrast to the prius's nubby little shifter. Door inserts have a softer plastic above the arm rest, and hard plastic below, with deep, wide pickets for cans, water bottles and various accessories.  models equipped with navigation and myford touch use an 8-inch touch screen that displays live traffic and weather in addition to audio and navigation controls. On the c-max energi, charging station locations are embedded into the navigation maps, although technology doesn't yet exist to know whether those stations are occupied. Drivers can pair their android or apple smartphones to use streaming audio via bluetooth and other features. While the myford touch system is good in theory, certain aspects are annoying, including not-so-accurate voice recognition and menu options that aren't immediately intuitive.  front seats sit very high and upright. Even shorter people feel tall in the car, especially in the passenger seat, which doesn't have a height adjustment feature. This is almost disconcerting for those used to driving or riding in a low, cockpit-style cabin. Front leg room is 40. 4 inches, a couple of inches less than the chevrolet volt, and about an inch less than the prius v.  however, the high roofline on the c-max makes for plenty of headroom, even in the back seat. Rear headroom is 39. 4 inches, almost an inch more than the prius v and nearly three-and-a-half inches more than the volt. The ford c-max bests the competitors when it comes to rear legroom, too with a spacious 36. 5 inches, a tad more than the prius v and a whop.
